FAQ's

Could you explain the terms of supply?

1. In kit form for self build:

Your Log House can be supplied with all the elements and materials needed for the construction of the structure. It does not include materials for the infrastructure, e.g. insulation materials, electrical installation, concrete base, drains, kitchen, bathroom(s), furniture etc.

2. The kit as above assembled:

The unit assembled onto a concrete base provided by you in accordance with plans provided by the manufacturer. This does not include materials or services connected with the construction of infrastructures, concrete base, drains, kitchen, bathroom(s), furniture etc.

3. A 'Turn Key' project:

We can provide a 'Turn Key' project for you if required.

For your own and our peace of mind we prefer to work in conjunction with your architect, in this way the architect oversees the whole project, guaranteeing you that all the work is carried out in a proper manner.

Many firms offer to oversee the work themselves, but we feel, in the customers own interest they should have an independent person overseeing the work to completion.

All groundwork, concrete base work, roofing materials and labour, electrical, surage, water, heating, kitchen, bathroom, etc. would be contracted out to local tradesmen in your area after first obtaining three estimates for each of the operations.

How is it priced?

The list prices are only guide prices for the 'log house kit' ex works and are exclusive of charges involving those items listed in the last paragraph.

They also exclude any roof tiling and fitting, brick laying or stonemasons labour, infrastructure, chimneys or fireplaces as each house is different from other projects.

If you wish us to get quotes for all these items we will be only too pleased to assist. Many different things affect the final price of a Log House, the same as it does with a conventional brick built house.

Things like the thickness of the walls, type and number of floors, profile of the log house itself, depending on if you decide to self build or have a 'Turn Key Project', level of finish you choose and equipment, last but not least the location you choose.

How long does it all take?

The manufacturing kit and various timber parts along with ordering the ancillaries for the delivery of a Log Home takes about 8 weeks.

We can then arrange transport to the destination of your choice, be it in the UK or elsewhere.

From the kit arriving on the building site it takes about 4/6 weeks for the shell to be erected including the concrete foundation base.

Once your Dream Log Home has been erected, you can move in immediately after it has been finished off.

Is the insulation effecient?

Thanks to its unique structure, laminated logs are durable and do not twist or crack.

Changing seasons and weather conditions establish some strict requirements for building materials. Wood is a hygroscopic material. In practice this means that wood is capable of absorbing heat.

Laminated log houses are warm in the winter and cool in the heat of summer. In other words, wood insulates and absorbs heat.

In addition, wood helps to balance the moisture levels of indoor air. That is the secret behind good and healthy indoor air. Too dry indoor air can cause itchy and sore throats while excessively moist indoor air is a breeding ground for microbes.

Our log houses are easy on your lungs and pleasant to live in.

A genuine Finnish log house is a natural wood structure and one of natures natural insulators, this also gives the log home acoustic properties so that it absorbs a high proportion of sound waves, making it a quiet and peaceful place to live, helping to reduce the stress levels of modern living.

The thermal insulation of wood is many times more efficient than brick and 15 times more than concrete.

In case of fire how resistant is it?

The causes of house fires are normally associated to the elements of décor, Paints, plastics or furnishings etc. not to the structure itself.

Wood in general is an inferior thermal conductor and the spread of fire is therefore very slow. As wood burns at relatively low temperatures, the thick solid walls of a log house would carbonise, making the penetration of heat more difficult with little or no toxic gasses being given off.

In a fire, metal structures expand and become twisted, and hold the heat causing fire to spread quicker. Concrete structures having steel reinforcing rods crumble as the heat twists the metal causing the collapse of the building.

The evacuation time from a log house, before any structural damage is caused, is much greater than in a conventional building.

How long will a Log Home last?

Log homes have been around for centuries, there are examples still standing from the 14th. Century.

The life expectancy of a log home built from say 120/140mm logs would have a life expectancy of at least 100 years if maintained.

How ecological is a log home?

Wood is the only natural and renewable source.

All timber used to build our Log Homes are exclusively from supported forests, in Finland, promoting the renovation of the forest for future generations.

Only 100% natural materials are used in our Log Homes.

We can provide Log Homes that fit into existing developments as well as areas away from the hustle and bustle of towns and cities.

Is it possible make a personalised log home?

We have total flexibility to produce 'Bespoke' houses in accordance with specific requirements of our Clients.

About 85% of all Log home enquiries are for personalised or altered standard models.

To obtain an estimate, we require the following information:

1. The ground layout made to scale.

2. The height from floor to ceiling and floor to the ridge.

3. The thickness you require for the external walls.

4. A profile of the house, showing the shape and design required. You can if you wish, take an existing model from the standard models and alter it to suit you requirements.

5. Other information you may feel to be relevant.

6. All types of construction can be undertaken, including:

Sports Pavilions and complexes, Restaurants and Cafes, Garden Centre shops, Storage, Catering facilities, Musical theatres and rooms where acoustics are of prominence, Hotels, Complete Sports Complexes, Farm B&B's (there may be grants available for this), Lecture halls, Village Halls, Pubs, Holiday Camps, Swimming Pools of all sizes and widths, Information Centres, Pick-Your-Own shops, Offices large and small, Mansions and Palaces (and we are not kidding) etc.

What type of heating system can I use?

The conventional heating systems used by the Finns are central stone wood burners that heat the whole house from one point backed up with under floor heating.

You can use any of the conventional heating systems available today if you wish.

We can supply the Finnish style wood burners, but you will need to have a brick chimney build into the log home by your builder. It would be difficult to add one of these after the house had been built.
